Information for participants


I. General


1. The Ministerial Conference on Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) which will be held alongside the 4th Agritec Africa International Exhibition is scheduled to be held at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) from 14 to16 June 2017.


2. The opening of the session will take place at 10.00 hours on 14 June 2017, at the Amphitheatre, KICC, Nairobi.


II. Registration and identification badges


1. Participants are requested to register no later than Tuesday 13th June 2017, to facilitate smooth co-ordination for the compilation of the list of participants and other logistics in readiness for the meeting. 2. Additional logistical information will be provided upon the confirmation of your participation.


III. Visa requirements:


Participants are REQUIRED to obtain an appropriate entry visa to Kenya, EXCEPT for those nationals listed below.

Holders of Diplomatic, Official, Special, and Service Passports, from The Republic of Turkey and members of their families holding valid Diplomatic, Official, Special, and Service Passports, while on Transit or Stay not exceeding ninety (90) days.

Visa application should register by clicking on “click here to register” and create an e-citizen account using their email addresses only.


To apply for an appropriate entry visa to Kenya, participants are required to contact the respective Kenya Embassy/Consulate for accurate information regarding their visa application procedures and required documents. The list of Kenyan Embassies/Consulates can be found at http://www.mfa.go.ke/


Participants who may wish to apply for a visa outside of their country of residence or reside in a country where there is no Kenyan Embassy /Consulate should check the location where it is possible for them to apply for a Kenyan visa.


The following can NOT make e-Visa applications on e-Citizen. These Nationals of countries, classes and categories of persons require Referred Visas. The VISA applications are referred to the Director of Immigration services for processing and approval.

NOTE: All participants are advised to consult with the Kenya Embassy/Consulate in their respective countries regarding the latest applicable immigration requirements prior to their departure for Kenya.

IV. Weather


The daily average temperature for Nairobi in June is usually around 18 degrees with an average of 6 rainy days (low chances but possible). The temperatures change dramatically during the evenings and many visitors will want to bring a jacket. The average daily sunshine is 11 hours.


V. Electric plug and socket


The electric power in Kenya is 240V running at 50Hz and the plug types used are type G. A hybrid socket is almost universally found which accepts the plug type. Delegates are strongly encouraged to carry their own adapters for use with laptops and other electrical appliances. In case of need, adapters can be purchased from shops in the city dealing in electronic and electrical items.


VI. Health and vaccination


Upon arrival at the point of entry in Kenya, participants who are nationals of or have travelled from/through the countries listed below, which have been declared yellow fever infected areas, must provide an International Health Certificate proving that they have received a valid yellow fever vaccination at the Health Control Office before proceeding to immigration. A valid vaccination certificate means that the vaccine was administered at least 10 days prior to travel to the affected country. The International Health Certificate must also be submitted together with the visa application form.

Vii. Currency and Banking


The Kenyan currency is known as the Kenyan Shillings (Ksh). Bank notes are available in denominations of Ksh 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000. Coins are available in denominations of Ksh 1, 5, 10, 20 and 40. There are some hotels that accept foreign currency but do have higher rates.


Any person who carries an aggregate amount of foreign currency equal to or exceeding US$ 10,000 or its equivalent will be required to provide additional information to the banks as a mandatory requirement by Central Bank of Kenya under the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Regulations, 2013.


Currency exchange facilities are available at the International terminal of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport accessible both to arriving and departing passengers. Additionally, such services are also available in Nairobi City and no commissions are charged. Banks generally open from 0830 to 1530 hours, with no lunch break, from Monday to Friday and 0830 to 1200 hours on Saturday. Most banks are closed on Sundays.


All major credit cards (Visa, Master Card, American Express) are widely accepted in and around Kenya.


VIII. Airline reservations


Many international airlines operate regular services to and from Kenya mainly through the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Participants are advised to secure their return bookings prior to their departure for Kenya. If this is not possible, they should make firm return bookings immediately upon arrival in Nairobi.


IX. Hotels

X. Payment of hotel accounts


Most hotels accept major credit and debit cards.


XI. Transport from and to airport and to the meeting venue

XII. Internet services


The meeting venue will provide free Wi-Fi for all the participants who will be attending the meeting. Connection details will be provided to participants at the start of the meeting or upon arrival at the venue.


XIII. Catering services


Coffee/tea will be provided during the course of the meeting. Exact break times will be indicated on the agenda.


XIV. Communications


Mobile phone sim cards can be purchased upon arrival at the airport from the Safaricom and Airtel dealers at a cost of approximately $ 2 or Ksh 200.


XV. Meeting documents


Any documents for circulation or distribution at the meeting should be handed to the Secretariat at the meeting venue. Participants are required to give an advance notice of their intent to share documents at the meeting.
